Malawian actress based in the United Kingdom Lois Chimimba is part of a cast for a series based on John Marrs’ novel titled The One.
The series premieres globally on Netflix Friday.
Chimimba came in the spotlight when she got nominated for a prestigious award in the 2020 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) in Scotland.
She, however, failed to win the award.
Chimimba was the first-time nominee for the film titled Group and was nominated in the Best Actress category.
She said Wednesday she was excited to be part of another project.
“ The One is set five minutes in the future, in a world where a DNA test can find your perfect partner – the one person you are genetically predisposed to fail passionately in love with. No matter how good your relationship is, which one of us can honestly say we haven’t thought about whether there is someone better out there,” Chimimba said.
She added: “What of a hair sample is all it takes to find them? The idea is simple, but the implications are explosive. We will never think of love and relationships in the same way again”.
In the film, Chimimba plays the character of Hannah Bailey.
“As the scope of the MatchDNA grows, Hannah worries that she could lose her husband Mark. They are totally loved up and she is bestowed with him, but MatchDNA starts doubts for her”, Chimimba said.
According to her, the series is essentially a crime drama in which many secrets are being kept and many relationships are getting complicated and that it feels quite tense.
“I am hopeful that the idea of what if we could find our true love match, this way, is one that will engage and interest viewers. I’ve definitely considered whether I would take the test!” she said.
Chimimba maintained that the show is available on Netflix from March 12.
“Next projects include The Offenders with Stephen Merchant, for BBC and Amazon and Vigil released later this year on BBC 1 and iplayer,” she said.
A fulltime actress, Chimimba is involved in theatre, television and audio work.
She said last year that her father Jordan Chimimba, who hailed from Monkey Bay, passed away in 2016.
“My father met my mother, Carol Chimimba in Scotland. She is Scottish. They were both studying to be engineers at Strathclyde University. When my father returned to Malawi, post- university, my mum went with him,” Lois said.
Now in her 30s, Chimimba said she was born in Scotland before her parents moved back to Malawi.
“I would love to come back to Malawi with my friends to visit a number of places,” she said.
Her parents lived in Lilongwe and Blantyre.
