ADL supplier differs with ADL management

The dust refuses to settle on the issue involving money worth K1.4 million that is alleged to have been taken from Airport Development Limited (ADL) by the parastatal’s Chief Executive Officer Rodrick Chattaika, with the parastatal maintaining that the items were supplied.

Through a notice of clarification placed on Monday in The Daily Times, ADL management said Group Afrique supplied the items and quantities quoted according to their conditions and the items were documented through Goods Received Note.

But, contrary to the claim by ADL management, the accuser, Alex Webster Corner, who has been working with Chattaika and owns Group Afrique Water and Sanitation Solutions, told Malawi News that he has never dealt with ADL and insisted that he never supplied anything to the parastatal.

“I have seen the notice in the news paper. It is unfortunate for a whole parastatal to go public and claim I supplied the materials. They should make public the things they claim I supplied to them. The truth of the matter is I cashed the cheque and no single kwacha was used [in purchasing the] materials for ADL. The money was used to purchase materials for Chattaika’s personal company,” he said.

Last week, Chattaika denied involvement and insisted that Corner is “mentally disturbed”, further saying the copy of a cheque deposit slip Malawi News saw was payment to Corner’s private business for work Corner did for ADL.

However, Corner said the only engagement he had with ADL was when Chattaika instructed him to send the invoice to ADL, but he (Corner) claimed that he never received a reply from ADL.

“No one knows me at ADL. Maybe Chattaika is the one who made the supply in my company’s name. I can’t go about denying a supply I made. The money [involved] is a lot and there is no way I cannot remember supplying items worth that much. The best thing they should do is give a list of the items they claim I supplied,” he said.

Chattaika is being accused of siphoning money worth K1.4 million from ADL to his own personal company called Baileys Investments, which manufactures bottled water Awa ndo Madzi.
