African Print Party sets tone

There was glamour Friday night at Cockpit in Lilongwe, where Nyasa Music Awards organised African Print Party to popularise the inaugural music awards that will take place this year.

The party, dubbed ‘Reloaded’, attracted a huge audience and the patrons were treated to a selection of music by DJs.

Models did their best to impress members of the audience. With all the models and some patrons dressed in African print attire, the mood was right to introduce the new initiative – Nyasa Music Awards – which aims at recognising local musicians.

One of the organisers, Chifundo Maganga, said Malawians are beginning to appreciate the idea.

“The feedback we got in Lilongwe was encouraging. A lot of people understand what we want to achieve by introducing Nyasa Music Awards. In general, we want to fill the gap that exists in the entertainment industry in Malawi,” Maganga said.

During the party, whose aim was to interact with the patrons, the organisers had the opportunity to sell the new initiative.

“We also emphasised the fact that these are truly Malawian awards [and that] this is why we want everyone to participate. We call upon young entrepreneurs to seize the opportunity and sponsor some categories. With only K100,000, each sponsor will enjoy the benefits attached to the sponsorship,” Maganga said.

Nyasa Music Awards has 15 categories. The nominations will be made via social media while the voting will be through SMS.

According to Maganga, details of the nomination and voting process will be made available soon.

The awards are being organised by Maganga, who is owner of Options Men’s Store, Mathambo Lowole of Thambo and E Entertainment and James Makunje of Mango Entertainment and owner of 15 Club Sports Bar.

The awards ceremony, which will be a red carpet event, will take place at Comesa Hall on May 5 this year.
