In an effort to preserve trees that are on the verge of extinction in the country, AHL Group on Thursday awarded Gwauya Catholic Primary School in Ntcheu with various equipments for its outstanding performance on afforestation efforts.

Speaking when he presented the award, AHL Group Limbe Floors Manager, Moses Yolamu, commended the management of the school for emerging the winner in a tree survival campaign.

The school received water cans, gardening tools and writing materials for beating other schools in the district.

Yolamu said it is everyone’s responsibility to assist government in fighting deforestation in the country in order to cope with climate change.

“We thought the only way we could do that was to distribute tree seedlings in several schools because we anticipate that the children will take care of the trees through frequent watering,” said Yolamu.

In his remarks, headteacher for the school, Richard Tchawo, urged AHL to send the seedlings in time rather than sending them when the rains are over.

He said in 2014 they received 1,000 seedlings some of which were already grown up, but that the pupils made efforts to water them as a result only 355 survived.

“The initiative is not for the children only, but their parents as well because they are the custodians of the forests which have been depleted through charcoal burning,” said Tchawo.

According to Yolamu the tree survival campaign started in 2009.
