Airborne Rangers have appointed Kondwani Gawani as the team’s head coach replacing Henry Khembo who is now the team’s assistant coach.

Airborne’s team manager, Emmanuel Sikwambe, confirmed the development.

“Since the departure of Mr. Thomas Maloya [former Airborne coach] last year, Khembo and Gawani had been operating in acting capacity, so, the team’s management decided to appoint Gawani as head coach and he will be deputized by Khembo,” said Sikwambe.

Gawani also confirmed that he is now Airborne boss.

“Yes, I was appointed as the team’s coach and I am looking forward to helping the team to stay in the league,” said the former MDC FC, Escom United and Silver Strikers player.

Gawani, who has C coaching licence, further said his relationship with Khembo was normal despite the change.

But when contacted on Monday, Khembo expressed ignorance about the news.

“I am hearing this from you because the team management has not yet communicated to me about this development,” said Khembo.

Apparently, during Airborne’s game against Blue Eagles at Chitowe stadium on Sunday, Khembo was seen sitting on the second seat on the bench which is normally occupied by an assistant coach while Gawani sat on the first seat as head coach.

Khembo, who took over from Maloya last season, helped the team to finish on position 12 in the league to escape relegation.

But the Salima soldiers have had a bad start this season after registering three wins and four defeats in 11 games played. They are currently on 10th position.
