Airtel builds toilets, donates 1,500 chairs
Airtel Malawi, through its Airtel Money service, has handed over sanitary facilities in three primary schools in the Lower-Shire district of Chikwawa.
The project is part of last year’s disaster recovery programme being implemented by the Red Cross (Malawi) Society in the district.
The three schools, namely; Bodza, Namiyala and Chikonje, were some of the worst hit education centres in last year’s devastating floods, which left their respective grass thatched sanitary facilities washed away.
Handing over the facilities at Bodza Primary School, which included toilets and special rooms to carter for the girls during their menstrual periods, Airtel Money Country Director Francis Matseketsa disclosed that the project has cost his company MK7.2million.
“This was meant to assist Red Cross society in its continued rehabilitation drive in the areas that were affected by floods last year. Schools must have good sanitary facilities on top of up-to-date text books and good classrooms if quality education is to be achieved. That is why, as Airtel Malawi, we felt duty bound to finance this project,” said Matseketsa.
Matseketsa therefore appealed to the cooperate world to partner other relief organisations who are on the ground in Chikhwawa and Nsanje if the two districts are to be brought back to their former glory.
On top of the facilities, Airtel Malawi also donated 500 plastic chairs each to the three schools.
On his part, Red Cross Malawi Manager Hastings Kandaya said the facilities will go a long way to bailing out the three schools from water-borne related illness that usually hit the schools and the surrounding areas during rainy seasons.
