Football Association of Malawi (Fam) and Airtel Malawi Thursday unveiled uniforms for eight teams that will compete in the 2022 edition of the Airtel Top 8 Cup.
The unveiling ceremony took place at Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre.
Fam Competition Sub-committee Chairperson Jabber Alide said they were looking forward to a unique competition this year after an exciting 2021 edition.
“We expect to see more goals being scored this year. We saw how exciting last year’s competition was and we look forward to more excitement this year. We are coming from the background of a wonderful competition and we want the same this season.
“We expect 11 matches to be played this year. All the games will be beamed live on Mpira TV and Fifa TV. This means that these games will be watched worldwide,” Alide said.
Teams competing in this year’s competition are Nyasa Big Bullets, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, Silver Strikers, Karonga United, Mafco, Kamuzu Barracks, Blue Eagles and Dedza Dynamos.
The eight qualified after finishing in the top eight of the first round of the 2022 TNM Super League.
Airtel Managing Director Charles Kamoto said his company was geared for season five of the competition.
Kamoto said the Zamadolo theme has been maintained as it has delivered the purpose of the competition.
“We are very excited to be part of Malawi football again. We are proud because we don’t just sponsor football. We sponsor the game with a purpose. Airtel is for the cream of our football teams and we expect good standards of play this season,” he said.
Fam President Walter Nyamilandu said he was overwhelmed with joy to see the competition bouncing back this season.
“We expect season five of the competition to be more competitive and help the Flames with a wider pool of players for selection ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Egypt. As members of the football fraternity, we are very thankful to Airtel for this kind gesture.
“This is the fifth season of Airtel Top 8 and the return signifies the good relationship that exists between us. I have no doubt that more stars will be born through this competition. Therefore, I am appealing to all fans to continue behaving as they patronise our games,” Nyamilandu said.
Bullets Chief Administration Officer Albert Chigoga said they are ready to defend the cup.
“Obviously, the task we have in our hands as defending champions is quite huge. But I have no doubt that we will make it again this year,” Chigoga said.
Bullets start the campaign with a showdown against unpredictable Karonga at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre before travelling to the lakeshore district for the return match next week.
Bullets lifted the cup after edging Silver 5-4 on post-match penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
