Airtel staff plant trees in Mulanje

Airtel Malawi members of staff on Friday planted 2,000 trees at Nachiwale Primary School in Mulanje District as part of the company’s ongoing green initiative.

The exercise also saw members of staff planting grevillea trees at Muhazi Dam.

Grevillea trees are believed to be effective in preventing soil erosion, improving soil fertility as well as providing shade in coffee and tea plantations.

Airtel Malawi’s Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, Norah Chavula Chirwa said the initiative was aimed at contributing to the protection and conservation of the environment and supporting the government’s efforts in ensuring environmental sustainability.

“We are committed to ensuring sustainability in our business as well as supporting our local communities. We are delighted to have taken part in this tree planting initiative,” she said.

Chavula-Chirwa added that Airtel Malawi is determined to integrate the principles of sustainable development into its practices of doing business.

She said part of their environment conservation plan is to plant at least 34,000 tree seedlings in 17 primary and community day secondary schools in Mulanje.

Nachiwale Primary School Head Teacher, Godfrey Siame, thanked Airtel for the exercise
