By Williams Gondwa:

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has announced that the draw for the 2019 Airtel Top 8 will take place today at Mpira Village, Chiwembe Township, in Blantyre.

As expected, TNM Super League champions, Nyasa Big Bullets, have not been included in the draw as they are serving a one-year ban, following the violence that marred last year’s final.

Bullets were given a chance to appeal but opted to pay the fine and serve the suspension.

Fam Competitions and Media Director, Gomezgani Zakazaka, said the competition would involve seven teams that finished in the top eight of the Super League log table season plus ninth placed TN Stars who have replaced Bullets.

“The cup will be played on home and away basis [where an away goal and goal aggregate scores rules shall apply] in the quarter-finals. The semi-finals and final shall be played on knockout basis in single fixtures. The fixtures shall be determined by a draw and there will be no seeding of teams at any level,” Zakazaka said.

Blue Eagles beat Bullets 1-0 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe to win the second edition of the trophy last season.

Teams that would take part in the trophy are Silver Strikers, Be Forward Wanderers, Masters Security, Civil Sporting Club, Kamuzu Barracks, Karonga United, Mzuni and TN Stars.
