Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) says it is using the on-going Airtel Money national netball trophy to scout for Under-21 national team players.

Nam general secretary, Carol Bapu, said this ahead of district finals set for this weekend.

The Under-21 team is expected to take part in Africa Netball World Youth Cup qualifiers in Gaborone, Botswana from July 23 to 30.

“Of course, the Airtel Money national netball trophy has become handy in our quest to identify Under-21 players. The forthcoming district finals will help members of the technical panel and Nam executive members to identify possible players to feature for the team once we name a coach,” she said.

The Under-21 last participated in World Youth Championship in 2009 when it was held at Rarotonga in Cook Islands.

Malawi finished fifth during the championship, which Australia Under-21 won.

Meanwhile, Bapu said the Airtel netball trophy had progressed well.

“We have not received complaints, and this is an indication that things are smooth on the ground,” she said.

Last week, Nam released a calendar of events for the richest local netball competition.

The district finals will be held this weekend while regional finals are scheduled for April 23 and 24.

Nam has also set the weekend of May 19 to 21 for national finals of the competition in Lilongwe.
