South Africa National First Division side Ajax Cape Town are believed to be considering a move for Malawi national football team attacking midfielder Gerald Phiri Jnr.
Phiri, who is on the books of South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants Bidvest Wits, attracted interest from both Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns in the last transfer window.
According to soccerladuma.com, Phiri has started to attract more attention of late after his exit from Bidvest Wits was confirmed, with the Malawi international currently a free agent and on the lookout for the next step in his career.
The 25-year-old has a decent record in the PSL, having directly contributed to 13 goals in 30 starts across all competitions, and it comes as no surprise that – as a free agent – there are clubs looking to bring him on board.
Soccerladuma reports that Ajax are one of the clubs leading the way with regards to Phiri, and they are of the opinion that a player of his experience can play a role in helping guide them back to the Absa Premiership following their relegation last season.
Phiri Junior is reportedly not bound by the transfer window due to the timing of his Wits exit earlier this year.
The former Be Forward Wanderers player missed the Flames’ two back-to-back matches against Cameroon in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers due to injury, according to Football Association of Malawi Communications and Competitions Director, Gomezgani Zakazaka.
Phiri spent the last two seasons on loan at Platinum Stars after failing to secure a place at Wits.
