The remains of a 20-year-old-woman with albinism, Eneless Nkhata, whose mutilated body was buried on a farmland in Dowa two months ago was on Tuesday exhumed for proper burial in her home district, Dedza.

An uncle to Nkhata is alleged to have taken her to Dowa after promising to secure a job for her but connived with some people to kill her for the body parts. She was later buried one-metre deep in the garden.

According to Traditional Authority Kaphuka, the exhumation was necessary as the woman’s relatives and some concerned people were not happy with the place she was buried.

“She was buried at a mere farmland, so we thought anything can happen. The owner might decide to cultivate the land so we feel she is not safe and want her to be buried at a proper graveyard,” Kaphuka said.

Minister of Information Malison Ndau, who was present at Kamuzu Central Hospital Mortuary where the body is being kept, said what happened was sad and Malawians should report to the police when they see anything suspicious.

“We are really touched with what is going on in Malawi, especially this type of brutality that is happening to people with albinism. This one is a special case as she was taken and promised that she will be given a job not knowing that behind that they wanted to kill her,” he said.

Malawi Police Service Deputy Inspector General responsible for operations, Rodney Jose, said they have so far arrested six people who are currently serving their sentences at Maula Prison.

“In this particular case, we have made remarkable progress because all the people that were mentioned, including the potential buyer, are in custody at Maula Prison. Seven if not six people were arrested and appeared before court and what is remaining now is for them to answer the charge of murder,” he said.
