Football Association of Malawi (Fam) General Secretary Alfred Gunda will undergo a performance appraisal before the association’s executive committee decides whether to renew his contract.

Fam President Walter Nyamilandu said Gunda’s fate will be determined at an executive committee meeting later this month.

“One of the agenda items is the performance appraisal of the GS. We are going to assess him based on deliverables which we are agreed on. It will be up to the executive committee to extend his contract,” he said.

Gunda’s contract will expire on November 30, having been renewed two years ago.

However, he refused to comment on the current development.

“I can’t be reviewing my professional work in the media; as such I can’t answer any question,” he said.

Gunda was appointed Fam GS in 2016 when he replaced Suzgo Nyirenda, who then was heading to the Confederation of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) where he was the deputy chief executive.

Initially, Gunda held the position of Fam executive member for less than a year after serving the Northern Region Football Association as general secretary.

He joined Mzuzu University in 2005 as sports administrator and rose through the ranks to the position of acting senior assistant registrar (academic) at the time of his appointment.

Gunda holds a BA in education and an MSc in sports management besides other qualifications.

Sports analyst George Kaudza Masina backed Gunda to get a contract extension.

“From the outside, Gunda deserves a contract renewal. It has to be appreciated that a lot of positive developments have happened at Fam under his leadership at the secretariat.

“The unfortunate part is that only Fam [president] and his board are accredited, forgetting that the body behind the success of the association is the secretariat under the leadership of Gunda himself,” he said.

Kaudza Masina said Fam had made strides under Gunda, which the committee has been riding on.

“It has to be remembered that during the tenure of Gunda, Malawi qualified for the Afcon finals, Beach Soccer qualified for the continental finals and so, too, our women’s football blossomed during his tenure. As such, let the Fam board do justice to renew his contract without hesitation,” he said
