All ladies volleyball tourney Saturday
TEN women’s volleyball teams are expected to converge on College of Medicine Sports Complex in Blantyre for the first ever all-women national volleyball tournament on Saturday.
Organising committee Vice-Chairperson, Catherine Nyamwela, said the Southern and Central regions will contribute four teams each while the Northern will send two.
The Central Region has contributed Kamuzu Barracks, Blue Eagles, Snipers and Luanar whereas Katoto Queens and Moyale Queens will represent the Northern Region.
Gems, Catholic University, Smashers and Hella will represent the Southern Region.
“We would like to inspire more women to take up the game. We need to have as many teams as possible competing in the regional leagues so that there is stiff competition. The ultimate goal is to eventually produce teams capable of competing in international events,” Nyamwela said.
She said the organising committee came up with a theme for the event, which is ‘Break the Limits and Live the Passion’, to prove to the sporting fraternity that women are in volleyball to stay.
Nyamwela said they want to turn the event into an annual competition.
