Kamuzu Institute Hall in Lilongwe will on Monday play host to Dzuwa Liwale Arts Festival spearheaded by Dzuwa Arts.
Dzuwa Liwale Arts Festival is an annual event which brings together different art disciplines on stage.
Chief Executive Officer of Dzuwa Arts Ignatious Kaphinde, said Thursday that they have lined up a number of activities and performances to give people a treat.
“We are ready and we would like to call upon art lovers to come and enjoy these performances. We have performances such as stand-up comedies, stage drama, poetry, acrobatics, music, dances (both traditional and contemporary dances) and magic,” Kaphinde said.
He said their vision is to turn into an international award giving ceremony where local and international talent will be awarded and celebrated
“We intend to expose and sell Malawian arts out there and the target is both local and international markets. We intend to bring different groups and art disciplines together to share ideas and skills and at the same time bring back the culture of watching stage drama performances,” Kaphinde said.
He said for a long time people have spoken on theatre being on a deathbed but through their platform, they wanted to change the narrative.
“Theatre is not on the deathbed. We have experienced a number of activities that have shown that theatre is still there. What is missing now is the support from people,” Kaphinde said.
Some of the acts set to perform at this year’s festival include Chancellor College Travelling Theatre, Harmony Arts, Dzuwa Arts, Hephzibah Arts Theatre, Nkhwazi Theatre Works and Scar of Life Youth Organisation.
Recently National Theatre Association of Malawi (Ntam) President Maxwell Chiphinga called upon drama groups in the country to move out of their comfort zone and start staging plays that were mature and also tackling various issues affecting society.
Ntam has since rolled out a competition that started with the regional contests before going for the grand finale next month.
