All set for Ecama Lake Conference

All is set for the 2019 Economics Association of Malawi (Ecama) Annual Lakeshore Conference slated for Mangochi from Thursday.
The country’s top economists and other key professionals are expected to be part of the delegation to the indaba to be held under the theme; Population Growth-Challenges and Opportunities, Economic Growth in Malawi.
The meeting comes as population growth is topical with the 2018 Population and Housing Census indicating that population stands at 17.5 million.
Ecama Executive Director, Maleka Thula, said the theme is timely as economists intend to brainstorm on ways of managing population in correlation with economic growth.
“This conference, therefore, intends to provide a platform for economists and other stakeholders to start the discussion, strategise and come up with policy suggestions on how to manage the country’s growing population and harness the demographic dividends for county’s economic growth.
“The conference is targeting high level representatives from government, development partners, civil organisations and all relevant stakeholders,” Thula said.
About 200 delegates are expected to the conference.
Thula said some of the suggestions made during such conferences are long-term.
“There are suggestions taken on board by authorities, but others are suggestions that can only be implemented in the medium-to-long terms, hence, difficult to see immediate impact or response from relevant stakeholders,” he said.
