All set for Fum policy conference

The Farmers Union of Malawi (Fum) says all is set for the National Farmers’ Policy Conference in Lilongwe tomorrow which will precede its 12th Annual Congress.

The two events, which will be held at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC), will be convened under the theme ‘Farming for Markets and Development: Partnerships for increased Farmer Productivity, Market Access and Incomes.’

Over 700 delegates are expected to attend the events.

Fum Chief Executive Officer Prince Kapondamgaga said the theme for this year builds upon the issues raised during the 2014 and 2015 policy conferences that unpack the concept of farming for markets and development.

But Kapondamgaga said unlike the previous conferences, the 2016 Policy Conference is designed to present and discuss some selected elements around farming for markets with a focus on partnerships for increased farmer productivity, market access and incomes.

He said the two-day policy conference will have parallel sessions in which the main presentation will be followed by a panel discussion.

“A panel of experts will add to the presentations by sharing their practical experiences in some aspects addressed in the presentations,” said Kapondamgaga.

The Fum boss said critical issues raised from the conference will be presented for action to relevant ministries including the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development and the Ministry of Industry and Trade after the conference.

Key presenters who are scheduled to guide discussions in the planned parallel sessions during the conference include Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Deputy Governor (Economic Services) Naomi Ngwira, Zachary Kasomekera, MacDonald Mwinjilo, Gideon Onumar, Cephas Chabu and Davlin Chokazinga.
