Over 20 youngsters are set to battle for Jungle Pepper Kids championship at Shoprite Jungle Pepper in Blantyre, on Saturday.
The tables have already been set, and it will be fire on the board as juniors will be sorting it out in the popular Jungle Pepper Kids Chess tournament.
The tournament promises to be a thrilling one and it would be played in beginners and intermediate categories.
In the intermediate category, Jungle Pepper chess king, Khwima Gondwe is expected to receive serious opposition from the ever creative Namangale brothers (Allen and Rafik), David Mkomba, Yebo Sanga and Tafadzwa Linje among others.
In the beginner’s category, defending champion Mishelle Chimbe must watch out for Daisy Huwa, Wil Phoso, Kasokena Kamwendo, Mirabelle Chafumuka and Dumisani Maweja as they have potential to stun her.
Southern Region coordinator for chess in schools, Magret Ngugama, said they expected other promising players to impress and among them are Careb Msonda, Joel Chikwiri, Troy Namaona, Wayne Nyirenda, Mzati Linje, Chifuniro Chimbe, Danielle Kanjadza,Curtis Kanjadza, Thumbiko Mtumbuka, Eugene Mkandawire, Wayne Nyirenda and John Chifumbi.
This Jungle Pepper Kids chess tournament has been feasible thanks to the K100, 000 top up from former national ladies chess queen, Susan Namangale and concerned parents Mr and Mrs Chafumuka.
Southern Region Chess chairperson, Terrence Namaona, said they were happy with how kids chess was progressing in the region through the Jungle Pepper kids chess programme.
He also said parents must bring their kids to Jungle Pepper by 8:30 Am with K1000 registration fee.
“It will be over by 13 hrs and any kid is allowed to come,” Namaona said.
