All set for K5 million Superior Drama contest launch
The K5 million Superior Drama competition will be launched on Monday at Blantyre Cultural Centre.
The competition, which will start early next month and will see the winner walking away with K1.5 million, is being driven by Superior Events Management through its sister company Superior Events in conjunction with National Theatre Association of Malawi (Ntam).
The second and third positions will receive K750,000 and K500,000 respectively during the nationwide competition which will start at district level before moving to regional then national contest to be held in Lilongwe.
Superior Events Management Director Japhet Majekete said on Wednesday that they would want to revive theatre in the country hence coming up with the competition.
“We just want to call upon people to come in large numbers and be part of this launch. This is a family entertainment. We have several drama groups performing during the launch, that is why we are calling it a drama festival,” Majekete said.
He said through Superior Films, they are ready to give people exciting movies.
“We have already started working on the movies; we have so many stories to tell. As I said, people know us for the events we have been organising such as boxing but because of the passion I have for theatre, I have decided to help uplift the theatre industry,” he said.
Kwathu Drama Group will perform at the launch as headliners.
Other drama groups performing at the launch include Logos Theatre, Solomonic Peacocks and Upile Drama Group.
There will also be comedy coming from Chopwicho, Giling’ande and Muthinda and Mologeni.
“We just want to thank Superior Events for coming up with this competition. This will surely help revamp theatre,” said Logos Theatre actor Lewis Thembachako Masamba.
Solomonic Peacocks Director McArthur Matukuta also said they were ready for the launch adding that they will stage a play titled The Needs of A Woman.
Last week, Ntam president Eric Mabedi, who is also Kwathu Drama Group Director, said the competition has come at the right time and that it will help motivate actors.
