The games are part of the preparations for the 2022 African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games which Malawi will host from December 2 to11 in Lilongwe.

Briefing journalists in Blantyre on Friday, Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) President Blackson Malamula said all logistical arrangements had been finalised.

“Since the competition started in April this year, everything has gone on well. We are also happy that the second edition attracted more teams,” Malamula said.

In addition, Malamula said that sponsorship for this year’s competition has been increased from K157 million to over K200 million.

“We are impressed that the competition is achieving its objectives. For instance, out of 305 athletes who are currently preparing for Region 5 Youth Games, 280 have been scouted from last year’s edition and this shows the significance of these games,” Malamula said.

Taking his turn, Sports Council acting Executive Secretary, Shepherd Boma urged youths to make use of the games.

“We are looking at youths who can be nurtured to represent the country at international competitions. We need to prepare them for such competitions and these games are part of that process,” Boma said.

Up to 11,200 schools, both private and public, took part in this year’s competition. During the inaugural edition, North East Education Division (NEED) dominated the games, having won gold in both Under-17 and 15 football as well as volleyball. Malawi Government started sponsoring the tournament last year.
