AmaZulu coach hails John Maduka

Interim coach for South Africa DStv Premiership side AmaZulu, Brandon Truter, has hailed Royal AM’s Malawian coach John Maduka for his achievements at the Durban-based team.

Maduka guided his side to a barren draw with AmaZulu in a KwaZulu-Natal derby on Sunday to take its unbeaten run to 12 games in all competitions.

Royal are second on the table with 45 points from 26 matches.

They will also be in action against league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns in a Nedbank Cup semifinal on Saturday.

Truter described Maduka as a very good coach in charge of a very good team.

“A very good team, very good coach as well. They are on a good run at the moment. The structure is still the same as it was when they were Bloemfontein Celtic [who sold their top-flight status to Royal AM in August 2021]. It’s a team that bosses possession most of the time and they don’t concede much,” he told supersport.com.

Maduka said they reached their target for this term after a 1-1 draw with Cape Town City on April 16.

“We had minimum points that we wanted to achieve. We had also at the same time maximum points that we wanted to achieve and we knew that if we get the minimum points, which already we have passed there, we will be able to be in top eight.

“And if we do get our maximum points, the way we plan it, it will be able to take us in on top four or so, which is known as of now, we are closer there,” he said.

Maduka said he needed to collect more points from the remaining matches as the season draws to a close.

“We are going to our last games in the league and we need some points from the remaining games. If we get those, it will put [us] exactly where we wanted to finish,” supersport.com quotes him as saying.

The former Malawi National Football Team captain is having a season for the books after a bad start that compelled Royal AM to give him a two-match ultimatum late last year.

The turn-around resulted in the league honouring him with the Coach-of-the-Month award for February/March.
