Blantyre-based poet Kenneth Khondiwa, popularly known as Amfumu, will on Sunday invade Blantyre Cultural Centre to launch his second poetry album titled Foni Ya Wokondeka.
Khondiwa came to the limelight with the debut album Anaponda Ndi Mapazi.
“The first album was more or less like testing the waters and things went well. I worked very hard in this second album and there are several issues I have tackled,” he said.
Looking at the title of the album, Khondiwa said he is addressing the issue of mobile phones which, much as they have made things easier in terms of communication, have also brought challenges.
“For instance, you will see families spending much of their time on the phone, which is not healthy. I have also taken time to focus on relationships,” said the poet.
He said poetry was heading in the right direction in the country and that people are there to support them.
Khondiwa was, however, quick to say that there was room for improvement and that poets need to bring out fresh poems in order to attract new audiences.
“We already have the audience at the moment but we need to win new audiences. But we can only do that when we remain focused and avoid copying other artists’works. We need to change the way we perform and the way we hold our events,” he said.
Some quarters have continued to say that poetry has lost direction and that people have taken comedy for poetry.
Khondiwa called on people to come in large numbers and be part of the launch of his second album.
“The launch will only be historical and a landmark when people come in large numbers. It will be a unique launch and, for your information, we will not have an auction,” he said.
The album has 15 poems that include ‘Watulukira MG2’, ‘Achimwene Ali Ku Limbe’, ‘Usadzatchulenso Bae’, and ‘Mwamuna Ndi Mwana’.
The album was recorded at Tama Entertainment.
Khondiwa said, apart from his performance as headliner, people will also have time to enjoy the performances of other acts, among them Annie Matumbi, Mr Jokes, Raphael Sitima, Joseph Madzedze, Wamtali Savala Gogoda, Mr Malawi, Atcheya and Aunt Geti.
Other acts also set to spice up the launch are Khama Khwiliro, The Mighty Gyv and Original Passenger.
