A gospel group known as Amithenga is born.
The afro-pop gospel group has said it is determined to offer mature gospel music.
Amithenga, which comprises two men and one female, is being led by Philip Kalindo, who is twin brother to renowned comedian and Member of Parliament Bon ‘Winiko’ Kalindo.
The other two members of the group are Nelson Moses and Tusekile Donda.
Formerly known as the Kings Ambassador before rebranding to Amithenga in December, the trio released their first three singles on May 31.
The songs are ‘Mnthenga’, ‘Mbava Pa Holiday’ and ‘Multiple Choice.
It is, however, ‘Mbava Pa Holiday’ which seems to have made an instant impact since its release.
This, according to Kalindo, is because the song has a very powerful message.
“The song talks about how the world would be a better place only if thieves, prostitutes, thugs and corrupt leaders were to take a holiday,” he said.
“Our aim is to preach to the world through music. We want to spread the message of love, faith and hope to the masses.”
He said they are trying to work with a lot of artists without limiting themselves to gospel artists because they believe the so-called ‘secular artists’ also have a role to help spread the positive message.
“We have worked with Piksy and are hoping to do a song with Lulu soon. We do not want to discriminate by choosing to work with gospel artists only. Some of these so called secular artists do actually have very powerful songs with positive messages of love and hope.”
Amithenga’s sound is a mixture of R&B, Pop and Manganje.
Explaining on this very diverse fuse of sound, another member, Nelson Moses, said they are trying to reach out to all kinds of people.
“We use the elements of Manganje to try and give people something they can relate to while maintaining our Afro R&B for the Modern audience,” Moses said.
He said, going forward, their dream is to collaborate with international artists and perform at gospel festivals outside the country.
The group is working on a new album which is set for release in December.
Their three singles are being distributed to all local radio stations for air play and can be accessed from malawi-music.com website.
