Analyst back’s United Democratic Front ID move

husseinOne of the county’s political commentators, Mustafa Hussein, has commended the United Democratic Front (UDF) for introducing party membership cards, saying the move will help the party to assess the commitment of its members in supporting it.

The UDF disclosed that it will roll out an identifiable membership programme next month whose objective is to ensure that all party members are identified through possession of identity cards which will be given to members upon paying a fee.

Hussein said although as a country we are coming from a background of membership cards in the one-party era, introducing party membership cards is still in this day and age an ideal programme.

“It is a very a good idea which the party should go ahead and give a try. The party will be able to document information about its members and build a strong party because they will be able to know.

“In terms of funding, the money will be used rightly looking at the fact that the party will somehow fund itself with the membership fee,” said Hussein.

In an interview with The Daily Times yesterday, UDF’s spokesperson Ken Ndanga said the initiative was endorsed during a National Executive Committee meeting held in Lilongwe two weeks ago.

Ndanga further said the initiative comes as a sustainable way of raising funds for its operations and activities and that the membership has been categorised into platinum, gold, silver and bronze.

“This system will in no way abuse our members because it is only available to those who are willing; we are not going to force anyone. As we speak, only those that are in positions are known to be members of the party so now we are saying to our members that if you want to be identified and be a member, you have to show your commitment,” Ndanga said.

He further said the party is in the process of negotiating with some local firm from the insurance industry to partner it by working out an incentive that will go together with the membership, depending on the category.
