Some angry villagers in Dowa District Sunday set ablaze houses and damaged properties worth millions of Kwacha in a witchcraft related fracas.
Dowa Police Station Public Relations Officer Gladson M’bumpha confirmed the incident, which took place at Mbuta Village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Msakambewa in the district on Sunday.
M’bumpha said some angry communities from Mbuta and Misi villages went to the victim Elluby Kamuyikeni’s home where they pelted stones and set ablaze her son’s house in apparent revenge for a relative they alleged Kamuyikeni bewitched and killed in 2017.
“Kiliyoni Kamuyikeni and Velentina Chunga (both of the same village) were doing morning chores, at this time, the victim was about to start washing clothes when she heard villagers chanting that they were about to start demonstrations, then they started stoning her house claiming that the victim, Elluby Kamuyikeni, bewitched their relative,” M’bumpha said.
M’bumpha then said Kamuyikeni run to Dowa Police Station for refuge, where upon arrival, she was told the angry villagers had demolished her house and that her son’s house had been set ablaze.
Police rushed to the scene where peace was restored.
