Malawi Defence Force boxer Anisha Basheel will face Sarah Achieng of Kenya for the Commonwealth Women Championship title at Charter Hotel in Nairobi this evening.
Basheel’s trainer Clyde Musonda of Delta Force Boxing Academy in Zimbabwe said the Malawian was in the right frame of mind ahead of the eight-round contest.
“This fight is very important to us. Such opportunities do not just come easily. This fight came to us at short notice but we could not turn it down.
“Anisha is a professional boxer who is always in the gym; so, she is always advised to be prepared,” he said.
Musonda said they had improvised a familiar game plan as Basheel last fought in 2019.
“It has been a long time since I trained her but the good part is that she catches fast so we are approaching something we did on Sam Smith,” he said.
During Tuesday’s weigh-in, Basheel was heavier, weighing 62.9kg, whereas her counterpart weighed 62.5kg.
Basheel has eight straight knockout wins and six defeats whereas Achieng, who she will fight against for the Light welterweight Commonwealth Championship, has 13 wins including seven knockouts and two defeats.
Meanwhile, after this fight, Basheel is also expected to face Mbabi Brigitte in the Democratic Republic of Congo on November 20 in a non-title fight.
