Anti-Corruption Bureau arrests Cecilia Chazama, Masauko Medi, four others

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Thursday arrested former Homeland Security minister Cecilia Chazama and several officials from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services over allegations of abuse of office.

In a statement, the ACB indicates that it has arrested Chazama, Immigration and Citizenship Services former director general Masauko Medi, immigration officers Pudensiana Makalamba, Chandiwira Chidothe, Limbani Chawinga as well as Department of Human Resource Management and Development former principal secretary Hilario Chimota.

The statement, which ACB spokesperson Egrita Ndala has signed, further indicates that, on April 30 2018, the bureau received a complaint alleging that the Immigration Department had recruited 210 immigration assistants who did not possess the required qualifications.

The statement says, through investigations, the ACB established that the Department of Immigration had recruited 127 persons as immigration assistants although they did not have the necessary qualifications.

The six are likely to be charged with abuse of office, in line with Section 25 B(1), as read with Section 34, of the Corrupt Practices Act.

The bureau indicates that the suspects would be taken to court after being interviewed.
