The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested District Commissioner for Mwanza, Jack Ngulube, for allegedly being involved in fraudulent transactions that involved millions of the government funds while at Mangochi District Council.
The ACB has also arrested a procurement officer for Mangochi District Council, Michael Khoko as well as a businessman identified as Malison Mpiwu whose involvement in the supplying of various materials to the council is believed to have assisted in the plunder of government funds.
According to authorities privy to the matter, the three, with support of other government officials who are yet to be arrested, are alleged to have misappropriated Local Development fund (LDF), District Development Fund (DDF), Constituency Development Fund, (CDF) and some fund from Malawi’s development partners such as Iceida.
ACB Public Relations Officer Egrita Ndala confirmed the arrest of the three who are believed to have defrauded the government through fraudulent procurement procedures that date back to 2014.
“Our officers are currently interviewing the three and they will take them to court where they will be formally charged. But the charges are to do with misappropriation of LDF,” Ndala said.
The three are being kept at Mangochi Police Station pending their court appearance.
Last month, LDF announced that it had suspended Mangochi from receiving Malawi Social Action Funds (Masaf) Four, second cycle funding due to what it said misappropriation of funds. This development irked councillors for the district who were baying for blood of people who were believed to have been involved in the fraud.
