Areneo David on course for Olympic qualification

By Mphatso Malidadi:

Malawi’s 24-year-old archer, Areneo David, has enhanced his growing reputation by winning gold during an Open competition organised by the sport’s world governing body, Fita, in Switzerland on Saturday.

The development is a boost for the athlete as he bids to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

David, who also won a silver medal in an 18-metre indoor championship in January in the same country, will now be at next month’s All Africa Games in a bid to enhance his Olympic qualification chances.

Malawi Archery Association General Secretary, Henry Sakala, said the association was monitoring David’s performance.

“It is encouraging for David to win such a medal. This young athlete has the potential to make it big. No wonder, he was offered an Olympic Solidarity scholarship. We still believe that he can make it because, in the last two qualifiers in Bangladesh and the Netherlands, he managed to rake in about 517 points. Now he just needs to hit over 600 to make it,” Sakala said.

Sakala said David would be joined by some home-based athletes during the continental games in Morocco.
