Armed DPP cadet gets bail, gun goes missing
Police have released on bail Noel kaiya, the DPP cadet who was arrested last week for carrying a gun.
Kaiya was pictured with a gun sheathed in his pair of trousers at a function in Thyolo where Ben Phiri, former aide to President Peter Mutharika, was launching K10 million sports trophies for football, bawo and netball.
Police sources said that the cadet was released after police failed to trace the gun.
Police arrested Kaiya on October 12 after his picture went viral on social media.
Police sources, who asked for anonymity, confirmed his release from custody. A family member confirmed the release although National Police spokesperson, James Kadadzera, expressed ignorance about the same when asked yesterday.
“Our investigations are still ongoing. We are finding out whether the gun has a permit and he got it,” he said.
Police sources, however, said Kaiya, aged 42, has since been charged with one count of being found in possession of military attire.
Kaiya hails from Kwanjana Village, Traditional Authority Nchiramwera in Thyolo District.
Last week, Phiri, who is DPP Director of Operations, distanced himself from Kaiya when asked whether he was a member of his security detail at the function.
