Armed Mafco to guard top spot

TNM Super League surprise leaders Mafco believes they have the depth and strength to maintain top spot as they host Silver Strikers in a potentially explosive match at Chitowe Ground this afternoon.

The Salima-based soldiers have made a bright start to the season but their credentials will be under heavy scrutiny against wounded Silver.

Smarting from two away victories over Ntopwa (2-0) and Be Forward Wanderers (1-0) in Blantyre, Mafco might be in high spirits.

But Silver who had mixed fortunes away to Mzuzu after beating Mzuzu Warriors 4-0 on Saturday before losing 1-0 to rookies Ekwendeni Hammers on Sunday, pose a real threat.

A win for the soldiers will consolidate top spot regardless of the results between second placed Red Lions and Hammers at Mpira Stadium tomorrow.

Mafco Coach Temwa Msuku was optimistic of getting a positive result against the Central Bankers who have only won a match on the road this season.

“Silver have assembled a very strong team which is playing attacking and quick passes. Our aim is to deny them space and dominate possession,” he said.

In today’s encounter, Mafco will be without midfielder Stain ‘Yaya’ Malata due to suspension but Msuku has several options including Maurice Chiumia and Blessings Phiri.

On the part of Silver, they will welcome back Head Coach Daniel Kabwe who missed three consecutive matches as he was in his native country for personal reasons.

Kabwe said the loss against Hammers was water under the bridge.

“We want to prove that we are good travelers. It will be good if we will be consistent so that we get maximum points. Every match is different and we do not know how Mafco play. We will stick to our guns,” said the Zambian coach who is looking for his first silverware in his debut season in Malawi.

Silver have majority of the squad available for selection except Foster Biton due to injury.

With a victory over Mafco, Silver could overtake the soldiers on goal difference.

Mafco top the 16-member log table with 13 points from seven matches followed by Lions on 11 points from six matches.

In other matches, Kamuzu Barracks host Ntopwa at Civo Stadium whereas Civo Service United are on the road to Karonga to face Karonga United this afternoon.

Struggling Moyale Barracks will host Blue Eagles at Mzuzu Stadium whereas Mighty Tigers will be in action against Hammers at Mpira Stadium
