The newly inaugurated Army Commander, General Griffin Supuni Phiri, has asked soldiers in the country to serve the nation with unity.
Speaking during the hand-over ceremony of sword of command and medal of owner, Supuni Phiri, emphasised the need for the soldiers to work together for the betterment of the force.
“I must say that everyone has a role to play within the force. As such, everyone should be treated accordingly. We are a family,” he said.
The Commander said as he takes over leadership, he will not allow nepotism to take control but to regard everyone as an important actor in their operations.
Supuni Phiri warned the soldiers that he will not allow anyone to tarnish the image of Malawi Defence Force (MDF).
“MDF has structure, so follow these structures if there are any grievances,” he said.
The outgoing commander, General Ignacio Maulana, thanked the soldiers for the support they gave him during his tenure of office.
“I must give thanks to those who supported me and my wife, we will go out with happy memories,” Maulana said.
Deputy Minister of Defence, Aggrey Massi, reminded Supuni that the post of commander is an ultimate trust of confidence from the Commander-in- Chief who is the leader of the country.
“Having served as a deputy commander before, I believe that you aware of challenges that are in the Defence Force and the responsibility that the post demands,” Massi said.
President Peter Mutharika appointed Supuni Phiri on July 29, replacing Maulana.
Supuni Phiri joined the MDF in 1978 and he is the 12th Malawian commander to lead the MDF.
