Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers have gathered at Malawi Armed Forces College (Mafco) in Salima District for the 2022 sports festival.
The annual sports festival got underway Tuesday and is expected to end on Friday.
MDF Commander General Vincent Nundwe opened the sports festival and said MDF was committed to investing more resources in sports.
“We always want to encourage our soldiers to be physically fit and this is also part of our training. We will ensure that we invest in our athletes so that they do well in all competitions,” Nundwe said.
He also said that athletes who join military as career soldiers will be signing commitments to ensure they continue performing.
“We think that if they sign commitments, they will be able to work hard. But, as MDF, we will also make sure that we support them so that they are active all the time,” he said.
The MDF sports festival returns after two years of absence due to the Covid pandemic.
Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) President Jappie Mhango said the event was important for stakeholders in their quest to identify athletes to participate in future international tournaments.
“This will help athletes prepare for international tournaments. For a long time, MDF has produced top athletes in various sporting disciplines,” Mhango said.
The soldiers will compete in various sporting disciplines such as football, netball, basketball, volleyball and athletics.
