Artist cries foul

By Sam Banda Jnr:

MASEKO—It is just by
God’s grace that the audience understood

Mzuzu-based musician Emmanuel Maseko has cried foul over the failure by two female heavyweights in the gospel music circles – Ethel Kamwendo-Banda and Favoured Martha—to grace his show on January 1 in Mzuzu.

The musician launched his debut album Mwayenera at Squirrels Park where he engaged the services of several other acts including Kamwendo-Banda and Favoured Martha.

Despite the launch being successful, Maseko said the no-show of the two renowned gospel musicians affected the show such that some people branded him a liar.

Maseko also claimed that he was at pains because he had paid the two female musicians deposits.

According to him, Kamwendo-Banda charged him K150,000, of which he paid her a deposit of K130,000 remaining with a balance of K20,000 while Favoured Martha charged him K180,000.

“I gave Favoured Martha a deposit of K150,000 and remained with a balance of K30,000,” he said.

Maseko said a week before the show, Kamwendo-Banda started ignoring his phone calls and text messages.

“As for Favoured Martha, we were communicating until two days to the show when she told me that I should arrange accommodation which I did. But come the day of the launch she was nowhere to be seen and I tried calling her but to no avail,” he explained.

Maseko said, despite not being popular in the gospel music circles, he expected them to be part of his debut launch.

“It is just by God’s grace that the audience understood the situation; otherwise, people would have taken me to task. Some people said this is not the first time for the two artists to fail to come to Mzuzu,” he said.

Maseko has since said Kamwendo-Banda, who launched three albums last year in Lilongwe and Blantyre, has refunded the money.

“Ethel paid back the money Tuesday (Monday) and as for Favoured Martha, she is yet to give me back,” he said.

The musician said despite Kamwendo-Banda refunding the money, the two artists have tarnished his image as some people still feel he lied to them by including them on the line-up of his launch.

Kamwendo-Banda Tuesday said she had challenges beyond her control hence her failure to show up.

“I have helped a lot of artists and I am always present at shows, but a problem came up and it was beyond my control. It is unfortunate that some people have just come out to hit at me without understanding what happened. You cannot just receive money and then fail to come to a show,” Kamwendo -Banda said.

FAVOURED MARTHA—My child got sick

Favoured Martha, of the ‘Mawa Limafika’ fame. said she had an emergency at the eleventh hour after her child got sick.

“Plans were there for me to perform at the show but my child got sick and I could not travel. I know this disturbed the programme but I had no choice,” Favoured Martha said Tuesday.
