Artist Singano opens 2020 with ‘Absent Father’

Visual artist Ellis Singano, who specialises in batik, will this coming Saturday open his first exhibition for 2020 at Jacaranda Cultural Centre (JCC) in Blantyre.
Singano, who has impressed many art lovers with his works, will be holding an exhibition themed ‘Absent Father’.
He described 2019 as a successful year for him as he held a number of exhibitions including in Japan.
Singano, last year, celebrated 20 years of batik and 20 years since his father, who taught him the art passed on.
The artist has over the years also sold more works including at La Galleria in Lilongwe.
“The question, that one maybe asking is why Absent Father? I am doing a range of paintings based on a story of a family where a father abandoned his family, he left his wife while she was sick and so, the wife struggles to take care of their two children,” Singano explained.
He further said that the children ended up taking responsibilities at a very young age.
“The children become bread winners which was the responsibility of the father and they had to get this money through begging,” Singano said.
The exhibition is expected to run until February 5 2020.
“Through my exhibition I want to tell this story but there are also other stories I am telling. I hope people will have time to come and appreciate the works,” Singano said.
