Artists in Blantyre to exhibit their works on the weekend
A group of artists in Malawi’s southern town of Blantyre have teamed up to organise an arts exhibition set to take place at Kwa Haraba Art Gallery and Cafe starting Friday through to Sunday.
One of the organisers of the event, Gilbert Mpakule, who is also Visual Arts Association of Malawi (Vaam) General Secretary, said this is a platform which will give them a chance to showcase their artworks.
“You may wish to know that the country still does not have a National Art Gallery and as a result many artists do not have a platform to sell their artworks. So this art exhibition will give us that platform,” said Mpakule.
He said Kwa Haraba Art Gallery and Cafe is a new place in Blantyre which is owned by Thoko Liwimbi.
“We are excited as artists to come together and host this exhibition. Apart from showing our artworks, it will also give us a chance to network but also share ideas,” said Mpakule.
He said the art exhibition will bring both veterans and upcoming artists in the industry.
“We urge people to come and sample different artworks, in most cases, its only foreigners who come and buy our artworks. Its time Malawians started appreciating talent from Malawi, we have best artworks which they can buy for their homes, workplaces and other areas,” said the visual artist, who was recently involved in a German/ Malawi Art Symposium.
He said the two-day art exhibition will also be spiced up by acoustic performances and that there will also be face painting for children.
During the exhibition, Mpakule said people will have time to appreciate fine art, sculpture, batiks, embroidery and basketry.
Some of the artists set to exhibit during the event include Griffin Msoma, Peter Ndalama, Peter Chikondi, Andrew Chiwaula, Enelesi Pemba Phiri, Thandie Njima and Sydney Lundu.
