Artists in festive season messages


As the country joins the rest of the world to celebrate Christmas on Sunday, creatives have wished fans a Merry Christmas and thanked them for their support throughout the year.

Veteran poet Benedicto Wokoma-atani Malunga famed for poems such as ‘Ndizakutengera Kunyanja Ligineti’ and ‘Siananso Awa’, said poetry and other artistic disciplines have made progress in the year because of their support.

“I just want to wish a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year to those who enjoy my works and our works. Their support motivates us to keep writing and to fellow artists, let us not compromise in our work, let us strive to bring out quality work,” Malunga, who has also stitched Christmas poem titled ‘Kulandira Yesu’, said.


The legendary poet, who is now based in Machinga having retired from University of Malawi, said he will be using the festive period as an opportunity for him to spend quality time with his family.

Poetry Association of Malawi (Pam) President Robert Chiwamba, who has just dropped a Christmas poem titled ‘Usiku Woyera’, also thanked fans for their support throughout 2022.

“As they celebrate Christmas I thought of giving them a present through a poem and it is there to remind them about Jesus Christ. Most importantly let us celebrate responsibly,” the ‘Uzafa Imfa Yowawa’ star, said.


Soldier Lucius Banda, who recently launched his 20th album Love and Hate, said he has done well this year in his musical strides because of the support from people.

“We are always thankful to people for the support. We value and respect them and we hope they will continue to do that,” Lucius said before singing one of the Christmas carols.

Miss Malawi 2022 Jescar Mponda and her princesses also wished people a Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year.

“Let us celebrate the festive season well. Let us not drink and drive. We love you and we are thankful for your support,” Mponda said.

Miss Culture Malawi Memory Sanjira also wished people the best of the festive season.

Veteran producer Tapps Bandawe, who has been vibrant this year working with several musicians, said creatives owe their success to the fans.

“Fans are the ones who make us and we are always thankful for their support. Their support made us achieve a lot this year and we will keep pushing. Merry Christmas to you all,” Tapps said.

Musician Sangie of the ‘Mayi Wangwiro’ fame said people need to celebrate responsibly during the festive season.

“The festive season is here. Let us embrace it. Let us enjoy it but responsibly. Do not drink and drive,” she said.

Several other artists such as Ethel Kamwendo Banda, Khama Khwiliro, Favoured Martha, Limbani Simenti, Sir Patricks, Phyzix, Hyphen, Blak Jak, Phalyce Mang’anda, Anthony Dumba, Stitch Fray and Black Missionaries alongside Anthony Mr Cool Makondetsa wished people a Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year.
