SPAIN-BOUND—Duwe

A window of opportunity has opened for Ascent Soccer attacking midfielder Lovemore Mbeta and defensive midfielder Festus Duwe.

The two have been invited for two-month trials at Spanish fourth-tier side Velez CF.

Ascent Soccer founder George Maguire said Mbeta and Duwe will travel to Spain courtesy of the working relationship the academy has with Velez.

“The move is evidence of our philosophical and holistic development model at work, which is attracting the attention of professional footballers globally.

“The two players deserve this opportunity to represent the start of our pipeline development, which has been running for over seven years now. We are pleased that the dream is now starting to bear fruit,” Maguire said.

He said Mbeta and Duwe will be the first players from Ascent to fly to Spain for trials.

“With the levels of quality in our under-17, 15, and 12 teams, it’s just a matter of time before bigger and brighter things start to happen to our players,” Maguire said.

The 19-year-old Mbeta has been with Ascent for five years whereas Duwe, 18, has been at the Lilongwe-based academy for four years.

Both players have European experience, having played at the 2019 Gothia Cup in Sweden.

Mbeta also had a successful first-team training placement with South African DStv Premiership side Stellenbosch in August 2021.

Another factor that could work to the duo’s advantage is that they have played for the Malawi Under-17 National Football Team, with Duwe being named vice-captain in 2019 whereas Mbeta, then aged 15, scored the only goal that saw Malawi beating eSwatini at the 2018 Under-17 Cosafa Cup.

Ascent has been in a working relationship with Velez for over a year now.

The two parties jointly produced promotional videos in November 2020.

The academy also has several graduates training with some TNM Super League teams.

Ascent also boasts of producing prolific striker Christopher Gototo, who scored 45 goals in the Under-20 FCB Cup which the academy won in 2019.

Three of the academy’s other graduates, Christian Kakhome, Zobran Elias and Lughano Nyondo, are pursuing their football careers in the United States.
