Ascent thrash Malawi Defence Force Lionesses

Ascent Soccer Academy produced a dominant performance as they thrashed Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Lionesses 4-1 in Fam Women’s League at Ascent Ground Sunday.
The hosts outclassed their opponents in many departments.
They were in front as early as seven minutes into the match through Cathy Gaudi, before Atuweni Njirima doubled the lead in the 14th minute.
Four minutes before the break, Rose Kabzere increased the lead with a diving header.
However, Laita Magombo reduced the deficit two minutes later.
After the break, Lionesses came a changed side.
Experienced strikers Sabina Thom and Asimenye Simwaka played well as they were looking to come back into the match.
However, Ascent managed to absorb pressure.
Kabzere nailed the last nail on the soldiers’ coffin in the 78th minute as she completed her brace. Simwaka had a chance to reduce the arrears but her effort missed the target by a whisker.
The win means Ascent have risen on the log table with 30 points from 12 matches, just behind leaders DD Sunshine on goal difference.
Sunshine thrashed Chisomo Academy on Saturday. Despite the loss, Lionesses are third on the log table with 24 points from 12 matches.
After the match, Ascent Coach Thom Mkolongo was pleased with the performance of the players.
“The girls executed the game-plan well. We deserved the victory,” Mkolongo said.
On his part, Lioness Coach Yohane Fulaye said his troops failed to live up to expectations.
“We conceded early. The goals disturbed the girls and it was difficult to settle down,” he said.
Civil Service United Women also thrashed Blue Eagles 13-0 on Saturday.
They are fourth on the log table with two points from 12 matches.
The battle for top three positions is likely to go the wire as all the four teams have realistic chances.
