However, Kadadzera said he was yet to be furnished with information on the incident.

Kaliati’s arrest brings to six the number of people arrested for violating electoral laws in Mangochi and Machinga districts Tuesday.

The other four people were arrested in Mangochi after they were found attempting to vote using other people’s voter certificates.

Mangochi Police publicist, Roderick Maida, said 18-year-old Ben Kaunda of Masi Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chowe, in Mangochi was arrested for allegedly trying to vote using a voter certificate belonging to Daiton Mustafa of the same particulars to Kaunda.

“What happened is that, after voting, Mustafa gave his voter certificate to Kaunda so that he could also vote using the same certificate. But this was identified by the system; hence, the arrest of the two,” Maida said.

In other incidents, 25-year-old Bamusi Zipangeni of Mwanyama Village, T/A Mponda, and Ayilu Alabi of Kadulu Village, T/A Jalasi in Mangochi, were arrested separately for attempting to vote using voter certificates for other people.

“All the suspects will appear in court to answer the charge of illegally using the identity of other people to vote, which contravenes Section 115 of Malawi Electoral laws,” Maida said.

In another incident, Mchinji Police arrested a monitor who was assigned to Mphanga Polling Centre in Central Constituency for allegedly voting more than once.

Mchinji Police spokesperson, Kaitano Lubrino, said 42-year-old Charles Bikison was arrested after being spotted allegedly casting his votes in.
