HAZARDOUS – Some communities drink water like this

Aspiring Member of Parliament for Mangochi Monkey Bay, Gerald Kazembe of Malawi Congress Party (MCP), has drilled a borehole in the area so as to ease water problems.

Kazembe drilled the borehole in response to a story which The Daily Times’ Friday Shaker of September 28 2018 published about water problems which people in Group Village Head Kanyenga’s area in Mangochi District face.

“We cannot allow people to suffer one more day. When I came here, I met a girl carrying a bucket of water. She was tired and she stopped to rest along the road. I promised her that I would drill a borehole so as to help girls like her have water within their areas. This is part of my promise,” Kazembe said.

However, to improve access to water in Kanyenga, there is need for 10 more boreholes.

Village Head Dickson, in whose area the borehole was drilled, hailed Kazembe for his intervention.

“I am happy that we will be able to get water for drinking. This is the best thing which people in this area have seen so far. We will never forget this day,” Dickson said.

Residents of Kanyenga face serious water challenges, forcing them to draw drinking water from unprotected sources which are also patronised by wild animals.

As a result, some learners mainly girls, drop out of school so as to help out their parents in fetching water.

The area had one working borehole. As a result, women wake up as early as 2:00am, covering 10 kilometres to fetch water.
