Associations panic over MNCS ultimatum

Some local sport associations have asked the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) to consider extending the deadline to hold annual general meeting (AGM) to be eligible for the government’s annual subvention.
The move comes after MNCS advised the associations to provide proof that they held an AGM within the year or intend to do so before the end of the current financial year.
The council warned that associations that did not hold AGM will not be eligible for annual funding from the government.
So far Football Association of Malawi (Fam), Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam), Malawi Paralympics Committee, Volleyball Association of Malawi, Malawi Aquatic Union and Cricket Malawi have presented proof that they held AGM’s within the period.
According to our sources, four sport bodies Taekwondo Association of Malawi (Tam), Basketball Association of Malawi and Tertiary Students Sports Association of Malawi (Tessam). The source stated that the Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) requested to hold an AGM in September but MNCS has advised the body to hold it not later than June.
Tam President Chitty Nkhwazi said they had indicated to Sports Council that they will be able to hold an AGM on April 10.
“In the meantime we are mobilising resources to ensure that we hold a successful AGM where all issues will be tackled,” he said.
Basmal General Secretary Peter Gomani could not be reached for comment but he told one of the radio stations that they had requested to hold an AGM on April 29.
According to schedule, Tessam will be the first to hold it on April 1.
Sports Council acting Executive Secretary Shephord Boma said some associations are cooperating to be eligible for annual subvention.
“We will soon release a statement on the way forward,” he said.
