Eight athletes have started camp training in Lilongwe ahead of next month’s Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast City, Australia.

Athletics and netball teams will represent Malawi at the global event.

The netball team left for New Zealand on Saturday to warm up for the Games at Taini Jameson Quad Series, which throws off in Auckland tomorrow.

The runners, who will leave for Australia on Sunday, are going through their paces at Kamuzu Institute for Sports and Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe under Coach Emmanuel Mulonya.

Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) General Secretary, Frank Chitembeya, said Mulonya was favoured because of his eye for talent.

“Preparing for a big tournament like the Commonwealth Games requires the services of an experienced trainer like Mulonya. He has worked with all the eight athletes before and knows them very well,” Chitembeya said.

Mulonya said, in an ideal situation, a coach needs not less than three weeks to drill the athletes for the competition.

“There was need for the athletes to undergo several training camps to keep them in top condition for the Games. But I will still do my best to produce a winning team. We have defied the odds before and we will aim at surprising the world,” Mulonya said.

The athletes are Golden Gunde, Dalitso Gunde, Kefas Kasten, Chancy Master, Gervasio Mpani, Benedict Makumba, Ndacha Mcherenje and Francis Khanje.

AAM has pledged a cash reward of K500,000 for any of the athletes who brings back a medal from the competition.
