Athletes to undergo tests after local races

Local athletes would now be required to undergo doping tests after every domestic race following strong conditions which the Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) has set to improve the sport.

This will be the first time for local athletes to undergo tests in the country.

AAM president, Godfrey Phiri, said they would work jointly with the local doping body to carry tests on outstanding athletes as well as suspected ones.

“Whenever, we are having races we will be inviting the local doping agency to make sure that we are safe in this area. We don’t want our athletes to use performance-enhancing drugs,” he said.

“We don’t want to be caught off-guard on the international level where our athletes might fail such tests. So, we want to address the situation right here before we embarrass ourselves.”

Doping refers to athletes’ use of banned athletic performance-enhancing drugs. The term doping is widely used by organisations that regulate sporting competitions.

“The use of drugs to enhance performance is considered unethical by most international sports organisations, including the International Olympic Committee,” Wikipedia states.

Phiri also said AAM would now only recognise and register clubs that fulfill some conditions, including having an operational bank account and a constitution.

“A club must also have a minimum of five members, failing which, we will not register it. We are doing this to fight bogus clubs,” he said.

Phiri said AAM would also introduce a marketing and franchise department to promote the association’s activities.
