PRESIDENT HAS THE LIBERTY—Kampondeni

United Democratic Front (UDF) President, Atupele Muluzi, Monday expressed surprise over a scheduled meeting between President Lazarus Chakwera and UDF Vice President for the South, Lance Mbewe and Secretary General, Kandi Padambo.

Briefing reporters at the Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, State House Director of Communications, Sean Kampondeni, said among other dignitaries, Chakwera was Monday expected to meet the two UDF top officials.

Kampondeni said Chakwera appreciates the contributions of the opposition as he continues with his agenda of transforming the country.

According to Kampondeni Chakwera also promised to engage the Leader of Opposition every quarter to discuss how to move the country forward together.

But in an interview yesterday, Atupele said he was not aware of the meeting between Chakwera and the UDF officials.

He said both Mbewe and Padambo did not inform him about a meeting with Chakwera.

“I know nothing about the meeting. I was not informed even by Padambo and Mbewe. This is not okay. It will be misunderstood. Divide and rule perhaps?” Muluzi said.

Asked why they opted for Padambo and Mbewe and ignoring the party leader, Muluzi, Kampondeni said the President has the liberty to choose who he would like to grant at audience.

According to Kampondeni Chakwera would also meet representatives of People’s Land Organisation who are fighting for land rights in the Southern Region districts of Thyolo and Mulanje.

He added that Chakwera is this week also expected to meet lawyer Z Allan Mtata, to share notes on how the fight against corruption can be won.

On August 31 this year, Mbewe wrote Muluzi and Padambo to call for an extraordinary national conference to discuss the future of the party.

According to the letter, Mbewe said some of the decisions the UDF made in recent years, including its working relationship with the DPP were never supported by the party’s membership.
