Atupele Muluzi, Juliana Lunguzi clash over health reforms

Minister of Health (MoH), Atupele Muluzi, has accused Parliamentary Committee on Health Chairperson, Juliana Lunguzi, of being ill-informed and making vague statements on health sector reforms.

Muluzi was reacting to Lunguzi’s sentiments that government is sceptical on introduction of national medical insurance scheme, one of the four health sector reform areas.

“She is ill-informed and making vague statements to the people of Malawi, which is not helpful. My office is already in an active conversation with GIZ and other development partners to look at all health finance options. The aim being to be able to support Universal Health care to all Malawians,” he said

He said the plan would be finalised very soon and the ministry would discuss it with Cabinet before it is implemented.

But Lunguzi has hit back, saying people should understand Muluzi’s accusations as coming from someone who is learning about the sector.

“My reference to government is collective, [and goes back to] when the issues first started being discussed with MoH. If he can check history in the ministry, he will learn that this has been an issue for quite some time. So, understand his comments as coming from someone who is learning about the sector,” she said.
