FINALLY SIGNED—Nyondo

Former Malawi National Football Team striker Atusaye Nyondo has joined South African National First Division side Pretoria Carries.

According to South African online publication Soccer Laduma, Nyondo was in action on Sunday when Callies advanced to their first-ever Nedbank Cup semi-final with a penalty shoot-out victory over fellow GladAfrica Championship outfit Cape Town All Stars at Danie Craven Stadium.

The former Silver Strikers attacker was denied a goal during the match when he headed an exquisite delivery from the left-hand side towards the top left-hand corner but All Stars’ goalie Keenan Peters pulled off a wonderful diving save.

The match ended 2-all in regulation time and had to be decided through spotkicks for the winner to advance to the last four.

The shoot-out went to sudden death after each side missed two out of five penalty kicks.

The last set of kicks saw Keorapetse Sebone slotting home to win the contest for Callies after Nyembezi Setelele missed for All-Stars.

Nyondo did not respond to questions sent to him on WhatsApp but football analyst George Kaudza-Masina congratulated him for securing a club.

“What Atusaye has done is brilliant. He has been idle for a long time and just needed to find a club. The good thing is that the team he has signed for is very good despite being in a lower division. This move should be used as a launch-pad to help him spring back to his old self. It won’t be surprising to see him back to his best with suitors hunting for his signature as he is likely to enjoy game-time,” Kaudza-Masina said.

The Malawian has been without a club since last year after parting ways with Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivandila FC.
