Aubrey Sumbuleta to spend more days in custody

The High Court in Lilongwe will on May 10 hear a bail application by former Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Director-General (DG) Aubrey Sumbuleta.

Sumbuleta was arrested for alleged sexual assault and was charged with six counts. He has been in custody since 17 April.

On April 21, Chief Resident Magistrate Patrick Chirwa committed the matter to the High Court on request of the state.

The former MBC boss was charged with counts bordering on indecent assault and abuse of office while working as Deputy Director of Information in 2010 and as MBC DG in 2014.

The summons of bail signed by the Registrar of the High Court said the court will hear an application on behalf of the applicant that he should be released on bail in such terms and conditions as the court deems fit.

Sumbuleta’s lawyer Oscar Taulo confirmed the development and said the case will come before Judge Chifundo Kachale.

Sumbuleta was arrested following Malawi Human Rights Commission investigations into his alleged acts of sexual harassment.

In the report released on March 29, the commission recommended compensation for the four victims who willingly testified before the enquiry and allegedly suffered injustice.
