The position of Auditor General (AG) has fallen vacant after the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) opted not to renew the contract of the incumbent, Stephenson Kamphasa.
Kamphasa’s contract comes to an end this month.
AG spokesperson, Rabson Kagwamminga, confirmed the development Tuesday.
“It’s true; the position is now vacant and we are just waiting [to hear from] the appointing authority on the way forward,” Kwangwamminga said.
When contacted on the way forward, Treasury spokesperson, Davis Sado, referred us to the OPC.
OPC Principal Secretary, Cliff Chunda, asked for a questionnaire.
Kamphasa has been adviser to Parliament, through the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), on issues relating to financial and economic governance.
A fortnight ago, Parliamentary PAC Chairperson, Alekeni Menyani, told our sister paper, Malawi News, that his committee would have loved if the government had renewed Kamphasa’s contract.
“Kamphasa took the relationship between my committee and his office to the next level; he has been an excellent officer working against all odds with full determination and government would not be wrong to continue with him,” Menyani said.
Kamphasa’s appointment followed the retirement of Reckford Kampanje in 2013.
Kamphasa, who clocks 58 years this month, is a partner in the audit firm Mwenelupembe, Mhango and Company and has over 38 years experience in accounting and auditing.
He is an ACCA fellow and a Certified Public Accountant who previously worked with international audit firm KPMG and was once seconded to the Malawi Institute of Management to manage and implement accounting systems when the institution was established.
