Over 30 Australians flew into the country this week for the wedding of Malawi National Netball Team icon Mwawi Kumwenda.
The wedding will be officiated this morning at St. Columba CCAP in Blantyre before a reception at Mount Soche Hotel later in the evening.
Ahead of the wedding, Kumwenda and her soulmate Wanangwa Mbwana had a bridal shower at Mame Motel in Mzimba on September 11.
A few days later, Kumwenda’s sister Hlupi Chalamba organised a hen party for the sweethearts at Area 43 in Lilongwe.
The former Kukoma Diamonds superstar said she was excited to welcome the Australians who include some of her Melbourne Vixens teammates.
“There are many faces that I have seen coming all the way from Australia just for my wedding. Some of the faces are quite familiar and I expected them to come as per their promise. But the others have come just as a surprise. I was not expecting them at all.
“Some are my Vixens teammates and the others are just family and friends. I really appreciate their kind gesture. It is not easy to fly thousands of kilometres just to attend someone’s wedding. You really have to love that person from deep down the heart for you to do so,” she said.
Kumwenda said she had been looking forward to the day.
“I have never been this excited in my life. This is such a special day to me. It is a great and unforgettable day as I commit myself to the one I love for the rest of my life. It’s a wedding that has brought together all my friends and relatives. The feeling is just beyond imagination. Words cannot describe it,” she said.
Politicians, traditional and faith leaders and sports personalities are expected to grace both the officiation ceremony and the reception.
